Anthem and Flag
Many state anthems praise battles and flags. The Užupis anthem speaks of an angel looking for a place to land, of a dog, a pillow and silence, of white snowflakes falling from eyelashes. It is quieter and more personal than a national song is usually expected to be - and that is exactly how Užupis wants to be.
Flag
The Republic of Užupis has four seasonal flags. Each has a white field, while the open-palm mark in the centre changes colour with the season: blue for winter, green for spring, yellow for summer and red for autumn. The blue winter flag is the most common version and can be used throughout the year.
The palm is one of the clearest signs of the Republic. It stands for openness, but also for a boundary: Užupis may be held close, but it cannot be possessed. During Independence celebrations, the honoured Užupean of the year cuts a hole in the palm of the flag, making that principle visible in the cloth itself.
Use of the Flag
Every resident of Užupis who respects themselves and their country may and should raise the flag of the Republic of Užupis. For permanent display, the blue winter flag is usually used. When several flags are raised together, the Užupis flag should be first on the left from the viewer's side.
The proportions of the flag are length 1.7 : height 1.0. When the flag is attached to a wall, the thumb in the mark must always be at the top.
The marks of the Republic of Užupis and UŽ belong to the Užupis Community, which registered trademarks No. 60521 and 60522 with the Patent Office of the Republic of Lithuania. Commercial use of the name, mark or part of the mark of the Republic of Užupis must be coordinated with the community of Užupis, but this does not restrict everyday use of the country's name and signs in citizens' lives, relationships and pride in their state.
The old site also preserved non-commercial production files: a flag PDF and the June 12, 2013 standards book for the signs of the Republic of Užupis. Before adding these files to the new site, the latest versions should be verified.
Authors
The words are by President Romas Lileikis. The music and melody are by Kipras Mašanauskas. The official version was recorded in 2003 by Aistė Smilgevičiūtė and Vytautas Kernagis, one of the honorary citizens who also gave Užupis the "Užupis Blues".
Words
You only lean close and the pavement rises,
So the angel has a place to land.
Holding a dog, a pillow and silence,
You dissolve into the windy night like a star in the palm...
Chorus:
And only the guard on the roof holds the sky,
So no one extinguishes it in the dark.
The souls gather again along dream shores,
And white snowflakes fall from eyelashes...
And only the guard on the roof holds the heart,
So no one extinguishes it in its depth.
The souls gather along shores in a dream -
You only rise and the clock stops
Counting itself in the spring of midnight...
You only open, and the whirlwind covers
The locomotive, the train and the station...
So no one extinguishes it in its depth -
Recordings
Besides the official version, there is a lighter GinGas interpretation (2017) and an instrumental arrangement by Glebas Divovas (2016). The audio links are kept in the page metadata and will be added as an embedded player when the site is assembled.
Further work: add sheet music, chords for singing together, the recording history and videos from Independence celebrations where the anthem is performed.
