Timeline: From 1641 to the Constitution in Greek

This chronicle is arranged chronologically - from the oldest document to newer events. Some dates belong to the real history of Užupis, some to the mythology of the Republic, and the line between them is, as usual in Užupis, gentle. The entries are drawn from the previous official website and await photographs, video and testimony.

1641 12 17 - The first real-estate transaction in Užupis documented in archives.

1997 05 01 - The terrace of the Užupis cafe and the Vilnelė quay open - "where everything began".
1997 12 25 - The first Christmas tree is raised in Užupis, a tradition that continues every year.
1997 12 28 - Jonas Mekas' mass takes place in Užupis.
1998 02 27 - A copy of the Užupis Angel is ceremonially presented to Valdas Adamkus in the White Hall of the Presidential Palace at the start of his first term.
1998 04 01 - The proclamation of Independence; the celebration is held every year.
1998 06 24 - The first St John's Day in Užupis.
1998 12 26 - The Christmas celebration in Užupis.
1999 03 21 - The first Užupis New Year, known as Traps.
1999 04 01 - Užupis disbands its army.
1999 05 01 - The first World Fool Championship, a continuing tradition.

The date puzzle: 1997 or 1998? International sources, including Go Vilnius and Wikipedia, usually date the proclamation of the Republic of Užupis to April 1, 1997, while the community chronicle marks the official proclamation of Independence on April 1, 1998. It is likely that the Republic was born as an idea in 1997, around the cafe and first celebrations, and publicly proclaimed independence in 1998. We keep the note and invite verification from primary sources - a good prompt for archive work.

2000 04 01 - Užupis and Lithuanian officials introduce border-control mode for the first time; passport crossing marks spread around the world. On the same day, volunteers of LK SKAT 82 battalion swear to defend the Republic's values in the streets of Užupis.
2000 04 24 - The first White Tablecloth Day.
2000 11 11 - The first Wind Days.
2000 11 15 - A resident of Užupis becomes mayor of neighbouring Vilnius for the first time.
2001 04 01 - Ambassadors of the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan present credentials - the beginning of international recognition. The Egg is unveiled.
2002 04 01 - The Angel is unveiled, a project realised through five years of volunteer work and donations without state support.
2003 03 31 - The EuroUžas is released into circulation.
2003 04 01 - The first Bekeš Wolves concert.
2003 06 25 - The same resident of Užupis again becomes mayor of Vilnius.
2003 07 05 - The first unveiling of the Constitution on the Constitution Wall in Paupio Street. The Užupis Mermaid is unveiled (sculptor Romas Vilčiauskas).
2003 09 14 - Knowledge, Angel Watching, Games and other pavement tiles are unveiled.
2004 06 25 - A treaty of friendship, culture and respect is signed between the Republics of Užupis and Lithuania.
2004 11 15 - A resident of Užupis becomes a member of the Lithuanian Parliament for the first time.
2006 09 23 - Honorary citizen Antanas Mockus visits Užupis.
2007 04 01 - The bridge by the Art Academy receives the name Fluxus.
2007 11 23 - The legal entity "Užupis Community" is registered as guarantor of the Republic's sovereign.
2008 11 17 - Another resident of Užupis becomes a member of the Lithuanian Parliament for the first time.
2008 11 25 - At the Užupis cafe, agreement is reached to establish the Vilnius Communities Association; the era of the "Užupis empire" begins.

2010 04 01 - A footpath is named Jonas Mekas Draft.
2010 06 15 - Tibet Square opens on the Day of Lithuanian Occupation and Genocide.
2010 08 30 - The first Užupis television broadcast.
2011 04 19 - The same resident of Užupis again becomes mayor of Vilnius.
2013 03 16 - From this day on, the Irish celebrate St Patrick in Užupis.
2013 04 24 - A treaty is signed with the EU Economic and Social Committee.
2013 05 28 - The presidents of Estonia, Lithuania and Užupis meet in Užupis.
2013 09 12 - The second visit of the 14th Dalai Lama; the "Mandala" mosaic is unveiled in Tibet Square.
2013 10 09 - Danish Prince Frederik visits, arriving and leaving by bicycle.
2013 11 08 - The first Estonian Film Days, a continuing tradition.
2014 01 23 - A volunteer aid movement for Ukraine is founded in the Parliament hall of the Užupis cafe.
2014 04 01 - Friendly visit of Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė to Užupis.
2014 06 13 - Iceland, represented by Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, recognises the Republic of Užupis.
2014 11 24 - The community senate approves the Užupis code of coexistence.
2015 03 11 - The Lithuanian flag "connects hearts and banks", a continuing tradition.
2015 06 24 - The Swings of Fate are hung under the Užupis Bridge.
2016 12 13 - Several ministers of the Republic of Užupis also become ministers in the Lithuanian government.
2017 04 01 - The orange metro line to Žvėrynas opens; the first Užupis World Chess Championship takes place.
2017 04 02 - EuroUžas circulation is stopped for the 15th time, with the rate settled at 1.00 EUZ = 2.70 EUR.
2018 03 31 - The 5th Congress of Ambassadors of the Republic of Užupis begins.
2018 04 01 - Constitution plaques are unveiled in 29 languages.
2018 06 13 - The third official visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to Užupis.
2018 09 24 - Pope Francis blesses the Latin Constitution of the Republic of Užupis.
2019 03 28 - A redesigned EuroUžas banknote is released to the markets (VB series, honouring Vitalis Balčiūnas).
2019 03 30-31 and 04 01 - Independence Day is celebrated for three days.
2019 04 02 - EuroUžas circulation is stopped for the 16th time (1.00 EUZ = 3.00 EUR).
2019 05 09 - The Kingdom of the Netherlands publicly declares national-security guarantees for Užupis in NATO format.
2019 06 07 - Azerbaijan publicly grants supply guarantees for the energy-independence strategy of Užupis.
